ACE the PAT

Updated: Jun 7, 2020

Number one strategy for perceptual ability mastery is to practice and practice. The key is to realize that you are new at this, you have had no background in three dimensional simulations, and thus it will take time for you to become good at it. So, you must manage to practice at least an hour each day, doing questions on each segment of the PAT testing, for you to become comfortable with the style of the questions and to become good at 3D-simulations in your head. This part of the dental aptitude test is mainly practice and using a time-proof strategy that works best for you.It does not matter if you are a female or a male, and how smart you are, if you follow my rules you will get where you want.

For me, the first time I did my DAT examination I received a very low mark of 17. I was quite disappointed but not shocked since, I knew I had not practiced the way I should have been as I was doing my actual DAT examination, I was perplexed and shocked how much it was different from doing it on the computer, so I chocked. My study pattern was also faulty, I became discouraged every time I would get a question wrong on DAT boot camp PAT practice questions and DAT crusher which would stop me from practicing more since, it made me feel helpless and left me feeling that I would never get this part right. However, after my first try of the DAT my second try could not fail, there was pressure but I knew where my weaknesses were. So, I decided to make a booklet for myself, consisting of practice questions on each segment of the PAT test. This way I would complete my practice questions and then refer to the correct answer after I had finished, to see where I went wrong, the second reason was that since the Canadian DAT is on paper, practicing on the computer proved counterproductive since my strategy that I had practiced with was to save time on the computer, and having the test on the paper is very different than the computer. So I thought it best to print them for my own reference and better practice. I started studying on January first and I had 1 month and 20 days to study for my upcoming DAT on February twenty second. With my strategy, an hour of practice five days a week on my own PAT booklets, I managed to get a 22 on this February’s DAT. I am serious when I say this February’s DAT was much harder than the November one, there were 2 rock questions on keyholes, which was unexpected to appear on the Canadian DAT, the pattern folding was extremely difficult, and the trop front end were honestly the most challenging questions ever. However, since I had my strategy it allowed me to save time by doing cube counting faster than anticipated, followed by Angle ranking, and Hole punching, even though it had all 4 fold questions. The key is not to dwell on the answer and eliminate the obvious choices first and having practiced on paper, it was easy to anticipate how to best tackle the problems. These three segment are the ones that you can master fast and easy, by practicing on paper, and it will allow you to understand which part you are most comfortable with so you can start with those sections to save time, which will allow you to use the extra time on more challenging sections. I finished my PAT section with 10 minutes extra, which I used to go over the rock questions and anything I had not marked. I will follow up with a post detailing my strategies that I used on my DAT to score high. A score of 22 in this February DAT is 98th percentile, so if you do what I do, you are guaranteed to get a high competitive score.
